The Unsupervised
A couple of weekends ago I had the privilege to follow The Unsupervised through an afternoon of recording. The Unsupervised was founded by my friend Jeff Younger - guitar (one freakn amazing composer musician)(nieghbour from my ARC days) and includes: Kristian Naso – trumpet (also former ARConian), Colin Maskell – tenor Sax, Russell Sholberg – bass, and Ben Brown – drums. These guys are incredible, so much so they were invited to be part of the Montreal Jazz festival this year and around that they will be touring with stops in Toronto, Ottawa, Fredericton, Moncton, and Halifax. (schedule here) In preparation for that we did some promotional photos and they told me they were going to be doing some recording.. Great Idea for Day in the Life...I have now been through a few recording sessions with different bands and I have to say it is such an honour and a privilege to be part of such a creative time. Every session is unique but it seems there are always a few technical issues, a hum, or a piece of equipment that doesn't work, or something. Band members always overcome what ever it is and when they get into their zone WOW. I can't describe to you how it feels to be amongst that. Here we go, the afternoon with the guys was great - load in, set up, set up, more set up, tweak, practice, food, oh and throw in a hockey game, then Magic!
Just an end note for all the photo buffs.. yes that is noise you see in the photos.. isn't it fun.. really.. don't have to hide from it. most of the photos were at 3200 asa, at anywhere from 1/8th of a second to 1/30th at 1.8 or 2.8. So dark it was hard to focus.. had fun though! The Unsupervised
