Eastside Culture Crawl 2020

The Eastside Culture Crawl’s 24th year was like non other. With the pandemic in full force organizers and artists weren’t sure if the Crawl would be allowed to take place. The organizers of the Crawl did an amazing job to Pivot the festival and offer a combination of very controlled scheduled visits and virtual experiences. They say it way better than I can. The following is a THANK YOU from The Crawl’s Facebook page.

“THANK YOU FOR BEING A PART OF THE 24th ANNUAL CULTURE CRAWL AND SUPPORTING LOCAL ARTISTS ...

The 24th annual Eastside Culture Crawl, which ran from November 2–22, 2020, successfully closed its 2020 edition after connecting with more than 27,000 attendees across the event’s virtual and in-person platforms. The beloved visual arts festival presented artworks from 257 participating artists from across Vancouver’s Eastside Arts District, through on-site studio visits, virtual studio tours, livestream and live chat presentations, artist talks and demonstrations, a curated exhibition at Skwachàys Lodge Gallery, and the festival’s 7th annual Moving Art film & video exhibition. Programming centred on the strength and vitality of the arts community—creative resilience through loss, connection in a time of great disconnection, and community building amidst ongoing displacement.

“We are thrilled that the 2020 Eastside Culture Crawl provided an opportunity for visual arts to reconnect with the public, offering much needed hope, beauty, and creative resilience during a difficult time,” says Esther Rausenberg, Artistic & Executive Director of the Eastside Culture Crawl Society. “When the pandemic first hit this past March, artists lost everything; their exhibitions, classes, and workshops were all cancelled. Through the unwavering commitment of our volunteers and artists, we are immensely proud of how the Crawl pivoted to produce a safe and effective platform for artists to showcase their work and for the public to enjoy it.”

Rausenberg added: “Art carries the capacity to speak to one’s soul and shift perspectives, and for many art lovers—after months of lockdowns and general isolation—the Crawl was a balm to the soul. As we move into the winter months and further uncertainty, we encourage Crawl goers to continue seeking art, through whatever channels are open and available. At the Eastside Culture Crawl, we will keep busy planning for our 25th anniversary celebrations in 2021, which will be an extraordinary recognition of the essential role of artists and art in our lives.

Thank you for joining us in celebrating the extraordinary art and artists of Vancouver’s Eastside Arts District! Don’t forget to support LOCAL at culturecrawl.ca this coming season, our artists would be thrilled to connect with you.

We would like to wish you and yours a healthy and happy holiday season and we look forward to celebrating our 25th anniversary with you in 2021!

Warm regards,

The Crawl Team
