Scream a photographic exploration by Wendy D

Scream breaks the confines of socially acceptable behavior, giving participants a unique glimpse into the uncharted areas of the human psyche. The project was created in 2005, when a frustrated fellow artist expressed his need to scream. “I agreed to do it and then was surprised by both the reaction of my subject and by my response to capturing this process,” recalls Wendy D. “That got me thinking about the complexities of scream both as an individual act and the constraints society imposes on the expression of it,” adds Wendy D. This no borders project, which explores human vulnerability and transparency has captured over 150 subjects expressing exuberant joy to profound fear. SCREAM has been profiled on CBC and has been showcased during the Eastside Culture Crawl (2005), 10 Year Retrospective - Mainspace (2011), Precarious Balance - The Cultch (2013), and After Hours - Capture Photography Festival (2015) Scream - a 10 year photo exploration - Capture Festival (2016)

It took 10 years to create the pictures, but only 21 seconds to set up the exhibit and take it down!

In April of 2016 I brought the whole project to a close. Scream: A 10-Year Photo Exploration was part of the Capture Photo Festival. I can’t describe to you the joy I felt seeing this project exhibited with around 500 8x8 images on the wall. Margaret Gallagher from CBC stopped by as I was setting up.

In this Video, from Many years ago, I was interviewed by Dave Gerry, from “My Vancouver” on Telus TV.

Lesson of the day: be sure to communicate to your neighbours that you are doing an art project with people screaming. It was good to learn I had neighbours who cared and came to see if I was ok :)

Thanks to all of you who came out - Martin Kostin, Trish Kostin, Linda Watters, Shaun C. Roemich, Krista Magnusson, Lori Watt!

My goal with this project was to create a book of these images, not just present an exhibition. I’m very proud of that accomplishment – and you can buy a copy on Blurb!

BLURB You can buy it here

There were over 500 images on the wall for the Scream exhibit, Here is a selection of them…
